The Great Rob Kaman

Again I met Rob in Holland, in all we met about 20 times at various shows;

I had to share the dressing room with fighters like this…

Ronnie Podcast on Rob Kaman

I was fighting on the bills when Rob was also making an early career, following the likes of Rob and his team mates Lucien Carbin and Andrea Brillenaman. Kaman was a young man, a tall slim fighter with a promise of becoming one of the greatest fighters in Kick and Muay Thai. With his game and strategy Rob had it all to come. At first he had to live up to the likes of Carbin Brilenanman and many other fantastic fights from the Mejiro Gym, their trainer, the late great Jan Plas.

What I liked about Rob was that he was an explosive fighter, explosive kicks, strong punches and a great right hand. He was a large man and used the same format that Andre and Lucien used. The Mejiro Way.

With Jan Plas, he had trained him and created Rob into the Mejiro way and their style, great tactics, great fighters, great finishers. Back then they had their big rivals, their main competition from the same town of Amsterdam, indeed, it was war Mejiro Vs Chakuriki.

I felt proud holding the flag for UK Thai Boxing. Here I was watching and living, breathing the same air as Van Plas and Thom Harinck, in the same dressing room, warming up, stretching, laughing with the like of Carbin, Brillenamen, Kaman, all of us nervous but ready to perform as a showman to these large Dutch intelligent crowds.

I guess looking back as my dreams began to take shape, history for all of us in the ‘full contact’ game was turning into Muay Thai. Each with our own martial arts ways. I look at all of these great personalities as great teachers’ mentors and role models. Yes, we are dealing with fighting, it can be a violent way, but we all did it to show off our skills in the ring as an athlete and a showman. Or should I say, us fighters, gladiators, are martial arts athletes. Our aim over the years has been to take the violence away from the sport. Not to be an aggressive thug.

Take a leaf from Rob Kaman, he can fight, knock people out easily, he could still give some of these modern MMA heavyweights a good show. But that’s unimportant. Take the leaf from him that is the one that shines the most, it shines gentlemen.

Rob Kaman, my friend you are a true giant of a gentleman. From Ronnie Green

Learning from the champions of Holland

In them days most fighters had to share the dressing rooms. What can we learn? Have a listen and I will explain how these times of tension are very useful for a fighters career.

Ronnie Podcast about pre-fight tension

Things do tend to rub of, even if you hang around with the wrong crowd, that wrong crowd will rub off on to you. This is how these great fighters had an effect on me. I took these times of pre-fight preparation on the day of the fight as a lesson also. A great place to meet different personalities, see its not just about the fight, its about how we can improve on what we do already do, that is our skill.
