Hi master Ronnie, im contacting you regarding my uncle who used to fight from 1975-1980ish. His name is Mohammed Zaka from Oldham. He was telling me about his fighting days and mentioned you, Master Toddy and Master Sken. He currently is not well and is suffering from prostrate cancer and wanted to cheer him up a bit. I wanted to get hold of some footage of his fights or some copies of fighter magazine in which he appeared. I wonder if you know where i might be able to get hold of these? He speaks very highly of you too. If i can get some videos or magazine they will go along way to cheer him up.

I was at the Martial Arts show in the NEC Birmingham UK this weekend and had the pleasure of meeting Master Ronnie. What an inspirational man he is. I knew a little bit about him from conversations I have had with Master Jake Ogden, founder of Jado Kuin Do, who himself has been inspired and instructed by Master Ronnie.

Watching Master Ronnie coach (pad work) was a lesson itself, I only wish I had recorded it! As others have commented in their posts, you are a gentleman in your action and words.

Keep up the good work

i remember 1981 i wanted to start tae kwondo went along to toddys on laystall street mcr met pete feeley on reception you dont want to do that rubbish you should do muay thai so i watched a few lads training and thought f++k that it looks well hard after watching whom i know now as pele nathan and ronnie green leathering each other in the boxing ring along with leroy atkinson and a couple of others.

so next week i started ronnie used to teach our class if toddy was too busy tucking into his chinese takeaways in his office.

stayed with toddy for 2 years had 2 interclubs got beaten to a pulp 1st one forget result of the second one.

so moved to skens what a change he wanted worshipping like some god ffs so after 3 years with this bs i moved to the main man billy hilditch who was right up my street with his approach and attitude alongside his training style.

anyway enuf wafflling ronnie youre a top fella never saw you lose your rag or slag off anyone in all my time training under you.

my best fights you had were the apollo fighting a japenese champion who you beat well and the thais at herriots in a boxing ring in the roman spa pool.

lol

all the best ronnie you is a star.

the great ronnie green, i tell people that i trained at ur classes at the old i.a.m.t.f. in mcr over ten years ago and they always say to me , "oh u never trained at ronnies classes", he,s a superstar.....i tell them people that ronnie is also one of the best gentleman u will ever meet. my experience of training under ronnie was that his methods are as much to do with how u conduct urself outside and inside of the ring. these are methods which i use everyday in life and have helped me greatly. u may not remember me but u will remember my gud friend lloyd metz who u trained and he just missed out on a british title against pierre mahonn in rochdale over ten years ago. it was a pleasure to attend ur classes and wish u all the best for the future

Master Ronnie,
Just a quick thanks for the taster session today at Phills, it was very different to what I have been used to before and was strange starting from the beginning. It was definately a mental challenge as much as anything remembering all the different starting points of the 5 basic combinations - (even though you probably find that part a breeze!) ! I would like to learn a lot more!

With deep respect
Ashley

I remember in the 1980s going to do muray thai at master toddys. In those days it was different tough not publicized like today it was a great fitness.I was just starting off and lisa howard was theretaking twekrando classes god she was tough. But there was a guy there so powerful fast.different from the others he had a power something about him.I was so impressed. He was a man called ronnie green.I did muray thai for another year but stopped it.But i saw master ronnie go on to win fight after fight to become the champion he did.And the master he is today. It was hard in those days i dont even think many fighters from the uk could stand up to the fighters in thailand let alone win.Like master green did.Today muray thai is becoming more popular and more famous.Masters like woody, sken, master A .master green are making it more well known. But the early days still are in my heart and my son now wants to train in the art.At 48 i am old but i will go with him to master greens I guess it never leaves you.Master green is a true champion and a manchester guy.And i am pretty proud of this. But prouder hes back in the uk learning this great art.Sharing his knowledge. And i wait to go to his sale cheshire class with my son.Ronnie Green you area true master of muray thai i hope to see you soon thank you for the memories..pete

I was fortunate enough to train with master Ronnie for a time at the cobourn street(i think thats what the adress was!) gym in manchester city centre neart the university( you then moved to `salahs `martial arts centre and that was a little too far to cycle for me!)

good times indeed. The muay thai taught by Master roinnie there was unique,`old style` techniques, taught from both lfet and right lead and very street smart for defense.

Finding this site has been a real pleasure!

I am now back training muay thai aged 38 after a break of some years and i keep checking in on this site as it is an excellent resource.

I remember when I was a child my father used to drive buses and he used to tell me about a passenger, who used to always talk to him. He told me he was a very friendly and humble man, that man was Ronnie Green. One day my father brought a video home of Ronnie fighting, long before I even knew what Thai boxing was! What I saw was definitely one of the inspirations behind me starting in the sport. As I became more involved in the sport I finally had the honour of meeting the gentleman Ronnie for myself. He was exactly as my father had described him. I am really happy that Ronnie is finally gettting the recognition he deserves. Your friend Mark Russell

Ronnie Green is the most affable, decent and superb ambassador for Thai Boxing to ever emerge from the UK. He was the greatest Thai exponent during the 1980's and is today the finest living example of all that a World champion should be !

I regard it as both a pleasure and a privilege to call him my friend.
Ronnie will one day receive the recognition that he truely deserves for the lifetimes work that he has put in to bringing respect and awareness for the Thai Arts .

Hi Ronnie I found these great comments around the net

by (thai.boxer72)
*************************************************************************
Ronnie Green pioneer !

Master Ronnie, how many years have you been involved in Martial Arts?
I began Judo and Karate in 1974 and then in 1978 I began Thai Boxing with Master Toddy.
How many fights did you accumulate during your Thai Kickboxing career and what were some of your achievements?
I had 48 fights and lost 6. I won British, European and World Titles in 3 different weight categories. My first highlight was my first fight in Holland and in those days it was rare for an English fighter to beat a fighter from Thailand, it was not heard of back then. I fought a guy called Lonkeada from the Famous Mungsurin gym, he had over 200 fights and this fight was my first. I was a late stand-in. I stopped him in the 5th round, he didn't beat the 8 count. I stopped him with a combination of punches and kicks. Everyone was amazed at what I had done, it was a bit like the Williams and Tyson scenario.
So after your first fight did you feel that people had high expectations of you?
Yes, another time I fought a guy from Thailand who was a top fighter and much heavier than me and on the day of the weigh in he looked like a giant compared to me. It was the last fight of the evening and all of Master Toddy's fighters had won by knockout with head kicks and anything less than a knockout with a head kick would not have met the expectations of the audience or my peers.
So you stopped him?
Yes, I had no choice. I had to finish him with a head kick just like the others did to their fighters.
Master Ronnie, as you know, the Ringmasters tournament has been created in honour of your name and your achievements. How do you feel about that?
Really good! The whole concept of this competition promotes skill. We are continuously trying to take our fighters to another level and competitions like this are made for that. Those who enter and win this competition would have to evolve and adapt and show great skill and determination. I would also like to say that if we can please the audience as well with what we are doing then the people are going to see great people in a great sport. This is development!
Do you think the Ringmasters could be a competition that could be held every year?
Definately, as it will promote the people and the skill in the sport.
So Master Ronnie, there are 12 of some of the best 75kg UK based fighters in this competition. Have you any advice for someone who is about to enter?
Be honest with yourself, what I mean is you can not be negative. I remember once I didn't believe in myself and it affected my performance and from that day on I said never again will I not believe in myself. After that experience I never walked into the ring with negativity. It's best to lose and give 100% than lose and think I could have tried harder.
Is there anything else you would like to say?
Yes. You know you have arrived in the sport when people in other countries mention your name and how good you are. I hope the Ringmasters competition can do the same for our fighters and help them develop.

Phil Glover writes:
Ronnie Green is one of the nicest guys you will meet and in his time by far the best British Thai fighter we had,[sorry no disrespect to other fighters!] Ronnie was in a league of his own in those early days.and he fought with such great skill that he could do things in the ring that only others could dream of doing.
Today we have many top fighters all taking the sport to the next level Liam Harrison,Andy Howsen,Richard Cadden,Peter Crooke,Reece Crooke,Kieran Keddle,Frankie Hudders,Christian De Paulo,Damien Trainor, etc, etc in the 70's,80's and early 90's there was one man in particular whose name stood out amongst the rest and that was RONNIE GREEN!
